An old, worn, deflated soccer ball once used by my two sons became the starting point for this piece. I could not throw it away because it holds memories of their childhood and our immigrant family’s journey. For my children, soccer was more than a sport. It was a way to enter American life, learn teamwork and responsibility, and become part of a community. As a mother, I also became a “soccer mom,” cheering from the sidelines almost every weekend and slowly finding my place in a new community. Created for Art of Soccer in celebration of Seattle World Cup 2026, this sculptural lamp combines light, collage, and images of my sons playing soccer. In a time when sports can feel overly commercialized, I hope this work reminds viewers of the deeper spirit of sport: joy, cooperation, movement, and connection.
